1 From a height It can be visually stimulating to watch a slick shiny stream of lubricant trickle straight from the bottle over your lover's contours. For optimum effect, pour very slowly from a height of no less than 30cm (12in), preferably at night with the fluid glistening seductively in candlelight.

2 Straight from the fridge For those keen on experiencing hot / cold effects during sex, chilling your lube in the fridge in advance will have delightful results. For nudist sunbathers who've spent too long at the beach, this is also a rare treat.

3 By foot A large percentage of foot lovers (almost always men) might enjoy massaging their partner's feet with lubricant; the partner then uses the bowed arches of their feet to massage his penis and coat it in lubricant ready for sex.

4 From the navel The navel makes a perfect self-warming well from which to dip. Simply deposit lubricant into the navel then trace it down the body with the tip of a finger or penis. 6 Orally Flavoured lubricants abound, from Low-Fat Decaf Cappucino flavour in Canada to Bubble Gum Blast in the UK. Although the comparability of taste to name is sometimes questionable, they're usually palatable enough to be warmed in the mouth then dribbled erotically over the body parts in need of lubrication.

7 Mazola style In 1960s America, freethinkers were rather fond of throwing parties involving plastic sheeting, naked bodies and large quantities of Mazola oil; the ensuing play wrestling and wriggling would coat all participants in the lube. You can try this at home with your partner, a bottle of of your favourite lube and a plastic wipe-clean airbed.

8 By hand If you do opt for the simplest method of application, at least take time to warm the lube in your hands first, rubbing it between your palms before lavishing your lover with a hot and wet surprise.
